Declared\u00a0\u201cthe young woman of a new Ireland\u201d by the Irish Independent, the contemporary Irish singer is no stranger to tradition.","section_news":[{"acf_fc_layout":"copy_image","image":"https:\/\/umusic.ie\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/place5.jpg","image_orientation":"portrait","copy":"<p>Born in the R\u00e1th Chairn Gaeltacht, County Meath, the university student grew up in a culture that lives and breathes traditions. Many of which a lot of the country has all but forgotten about. She sings with heavy influence of sean-n\u00f3s and brings an ancient Irish tradition into the contemporary space. For those not in the know; sean-n\u00f3s (meaning \u2018old style\u2019) is a style of singing dating back hundreds of years. It has been handed down orally from generation to generation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a style that the world doesn\u2019t hear much of these days. Especially from people in their early 20s. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N\u00ed Chasaide is able to use it to carve out her own space with incredible confidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe all pick [sean-n\u00f3s] up from the people around us,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she says of the ancient aural tradition. This unique form of story-telling still thrives in her hometown. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe teachers never taught us anything other than the actual repertoire. We never trained our voices; we picked it up from listening.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N\u00ed Chasaide<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first attracted attention when she was a 5th-year student when performing \u201cMise \u00c9ire\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">live on RT\u00c9 One as part of the 1916 centenary commemorations. The moving performance was a nod to an Ireland of the past and reminded listeners that, while they may be living in a widely different world today, Ireland is still shaped by its storied history and undying traditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Going International<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, Sib\u00e9al has performed across Ireland, the UK, and the United States, bringing her <a href=\"https:\/\/umusic.ie\/news\/5-irish-artists-you-should-be-listening-to\/\">unique perspective<\/a> to new listeners all over the world. On the 28th of September, Sib\u00e9al will perform in Sydney, Australia at the inaugural ZoneOut International Music Festival presented by Universal Music Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This full-length album comes after a successful EP, which was recorded live at <a href=\"https:\/\/umusic.ie\/feature\/new-irish-music-from-sibeal\/\">Abbey Road Studios<\/a>. On it covers of songs like \u201cHuman\u201d by Rag\u2019n\u2019Bone Man fit alongside traditional Irish-language poems and songs such as \u201cMn\u00e1 na h\u00c9ireann\u201d (\u201cWomen of Ireland\u201d). Not to mention folk staples like \u201cThe Parting Glass\u201d and \u201cHe Moved Through the Fair.\u201d Each cover allows her intense and haunting voice to take centre stage. Minimalistic acoustic guitar and violin serve as a powerful backdrop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She carefully chose the songs and poems to include on her album. Translating and arranging each on her own to weave together what came to be an evocative collection that seamlessly blends old and new. It\u2019s an album unlike any other that you\u2019ve heard.
