One that, for many of us, we probably don\u2019t give enough thought to the answer to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no judgment here. We don\u2019t want to tread into the realm of insufferable self-help influencers, but given that we have sleep on the brain, we wanted to draw your attention to the work of German-English composer Max Richter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"video","video_platform":"youtube","video":"AwpWZVG5SsQ","facebook_video":"","video_caption":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"copy","copy":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richter is one of the most renowned creative forces in contemporary classical music. The German-English artist is a composer, producer, pianist, and collaborator, equally as comfortable on a synthesizer as he is on a grand piano.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richter\u2019s material covers a broad spectrum of style and form. From his debut LP <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2002, to his work composing for screen on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waltz with Bashir <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2008, and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anothermag.com\/design-living\/14702\/50-questions-with-max-richter-interview-sleep-tranquility-base\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">own creative ethos with AnOther<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly that surrounding the earliest parts of his oeuvre, Richter asked himself\u00a0 \u201cHow can I tell stories in a way that makes sense to me? And how can I build a language?\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, narrative &#8211; particularly in the context of effective communication and \u2018language\u2019, is key.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is most obvious in the body of work which Richter is perhaps his ongoing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning with the release of the 8-hour odyssey <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continuing with a feature-length documentary, live performances, and even an app\u2013Richter\u2019s most recent installment in the series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SLEEP: Tranquility Base, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an electronic, and largely collaborative reimaging of his original work made for the recent world sleep day 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"video","video_platform":"youtube","video":"33ox7z96IUo","facebook_video":"","video_caption":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"copy","copy":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So where did the project begin?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxrichtermusic.com\/albums\/sleep\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the composer\u2019s own words<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> began as a \u201cpersonal lullaby for a frenetic world\u2026a manifesto for a slower pace of existence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original installment is widely regarded as a state-of-the-art contemporary classical art project. In fact, it\u2019s been credited as t<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anothermag.com\/design-living\/14702\/50-questions-with-max-richter-interview-sleep-tranquility-base\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he most streamed classical music album<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Released in 2015, this eight-hour-long epic piece was composed by Max Richter to provide a listening experience unlike any other. By pairing soothing melodies with ambient noise, Max has created a work capable of inducing states of deep relaxation and meditation.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"video","video_platform":"youtube","video":"v=AwpWZVG5SsQ","facebook_video":"","video_caption":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"copy","copy":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The album is divided into twelve distinct tracks \u2013 each one consisting of gently undulating drone-based harmonies and ambient soundscapes. These range from the delicate strings of \u2018Path 1\u2019 to the dreamlike piano sounds of \u2018Path 2\u2019 and beyond. Throughout, Max creates an atmosphere that encourages listeners to drift away, taking them on a journey through their own imaginations and emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"video","video_platform":"youtube","video":"AwpWZVG5SsQ","facebook_video":"","video_caption":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"copy","copy":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has gone beyond becoming just an album; it has become an extended musical experience designed to evoke emotion in its audience and even help people get a more restful nights sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, Richter was fascinated with and influenced by neuroscience studies into the science of sleep while composing the project. Focusing in on the different sleep stages, Richter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/daily.redbullmusicacademy.com\/2015\/09\/max-richter-interview\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoke with RBMA \u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and said \u201cThere\u2019s a sleep stage called \u201cslow wave,\u201d where all your neurons go into a roughly 10 Hz kind of phase \u2013 this is when memory happens and learning and structuring and all this stuff. That\u2019s the beneficial part of sleeping for our brains. People have been experimenting by trying to induce this sleep stage with repetitive sounds that are not too loud, not too bright, sounds that have recognizable architecture or structure\u2026 That\u2019s my music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, Richter released Max Richter\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a film he made in collaboration with his creative partner, artist, and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Yulia Mahr. The film follows the pair as they prepare and perform an open-air, full rendition of the 8-hour piece in its entirety.
