5 Things to know about Easy Life
11 July 2019 | By Ciaran Treacy
Easy Life, the all boy band from Leicester, are an eccentric mix of Reggae meets Jazz, along with a whole host of other genres. Here are 5 things you need to know about the band.
Who are Easy Life?
Originally from Leicester, the five members of the band all met while gigging separately around the city as seperate members of other bands. Murray (Lead Singer) and Sam (Sax/Bass/Vocals) both played in swing bands together while in school. Jordan (Keys/Percussion/Sax/Vocals) and Cass (Drums) both met playing in a reggae band. The four were joined by Lew (Guitar/Bass).
Murray grew up on his parent's farm, but he isn't a kid who spent his life picking potatoes and working chicken farms. “That’s been misquoted so many times!” Murray says, laughing. “There’s this Spanish write-up that was like, ‘oh he’s grafted his whole life on a potato and chicken farm’ as though I’d had an impoverished upbringing and never seen a city in my life and never went to school”
What's the sound?
Leicester is often considered one of the most multi-cultural cities in all of the UK, so it's no surprise that the band is a blend of lots of different genres. Taking inspiration from the city's strong association with reggae and dub soundsystem. The band channels the Happy Mondays, with a 90's happy-go-lucky vibe, while also giving off plenty of slacker looks (like an English Mac Demarco).
“Woozy, cheeky…Arctic Monkeys meets Mac Demarco, spitting out Kate Tempest-esque lyrics” The Times
It's hard to define the band into just one genre, since they cover so many! "We could go all R’n’B… but probably not. Who knows?” said Murray, the band's lead singer.
The band name isn't as straight forward as you might think. When talking about the inspiration, Murray said - “Easy Life is a form of escapism, living is proving to be increasingly difficult with all the pressures that modern life brings, and easy life rejects this materialistic philosophy; easy life is a hedonistic vision. When we coined the name there was a lot less thinking involved, but it feels like we have embodied the name over time rather than setting out from day one knowing exactly what it is we were looking for.”
The band are no strangers to our shores! Not only have they played Workmans back in April, but during an interview with NME at Glastonbury Sam shouts out our very own Kojaque. Easy Life will be back soon with plenty of new music and gigs for 2019 and 2020.
When Easy Life gives you lemons...
When you go to an Easy Life gig, there's a good chance you'll see a fair few lemons in among the audience. We do mean the fruit. The reason people bring lemons to shows is that the band once wrote a song with the word 'lemon' in the lyrics. From that the tradition was born.
