5 Of The Most Memorable Elton John Moments

For over five decades, the musical phenom from Middlesex has been lighting up arenas with his powerful, magnetic presence and distinctively catchy songs. Currently, the 72-year-old is wrapping up his career with a years long world tour, and just this month, his incredible biopic premiered in cinemas across the world.

Summarising a career like Sir Elton’s is difficult, as there have been so many incredible moments throughout the years. But if you’re looking for a little refresher before you hit the cinema to see Rocket Man, here are five of some of the most memorable Elton moments!

1. “Your Song” (1970)

Although Elton John had been active for several years, the release of “Your Song” in 1970 was the one that brought him into the international spotlight. Just a four-minute track on the b-side of Take Me to The Pilot, “Your Song” quickly grew in popularity, ultimately charting in the top 10 in several countries. The simple, sincere lyrics and the beautiful music touched the hearts of fans all over the world, and nearly 50 years later, Sir Elton still enchants fans with this classic at most of his performances.

2. The Lion King (1994)

As brilliant a composer as he is a performer, John took his talents to Disney in 1994 when he and Tim Rice wrote the music for The Lion King. A film loved by all, John can take credits for favourite tracks like “The Circle of Life,” and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” the latter of which won him a GRAMMY Award. Just a few years later, John composed the music for The Lion King musical, which hit Broadway in 1997. Both the movie and the musical were so successful that they’re regarded as some of the most influential soundtracks of all time, even surpassing the profits of Phantom of the Opera.

3. Billy Elliot (2005)

2005 saw John take to the theatre yet again, composing the score for the musical Billy Elliot. The play tells the story of an 11-year-old boy from County Durham who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes and encourages people to follow their personal bliss. John has said that he was drawn to the project because he identified with the title character and hope to inspire the world to stand up to societal pressures and pursue their own dreams. Today, the musical still premieres around the world and has been performed in over a dozen countries.

4. Almost Famous (2000)

The Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous threw Sir Elton back into the spotlight yet again. One of the most memorable scenes in the film is carried forward by “Tiny Dancer,” a track from 1971. The ballad steals the scene as the film’s main characters experience a tense tour bus ride, and then ultimately erupt into a singalong of the track. Since then, it has become one of John’s most popular songs, a mainstay of car rides, parties, and radio stations just about everywhere.

5. “Candle in the Wind” (1997)

Perhaps the most important moment in Sir Elton John’s career is a sad one. A good friend to Princess Diana, Sir Elton John reworked an earlier version of “Candle in the Wind” with his longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to pay tribute to the late princess. Immediately, the still mourning world embraced the song as one of John’s most powerful and most important, and to this day, it’s the second-best selling single of all time.
