Five Unforgettable Sam Smith Songs

pop

The British pop singer, Sam Smith, never shies away from revealing his vulnerable side and this is one of the reasons why we love him.

His soulful voice has crossed all borders and now he is one of the most recognisable names in the pop industry. From killer duets to soulful solos, Sam Smith knows his audience and isn’t afraid to have a conversation with them about societal issues that may be sensitive topics for some.

With over 3 million views on YouTube, it was clear to see that when he teamed up with disclosure for his first single ‘Latch’ it was the start of a special journey.  Since then he has gone on to win 4 Grammys and numerous awards for his contribution to the music industry. You know you have made it when you are approached to sing a James Bond theme song and Sams ‘Writing on the Wall’ was the main theme tune is the 2015 film Spectre, featuring Daniel Craig.

While Sam is busy working on his new album we take a look back on five of our favourite Sam Smith songs.

Latch

As Sam’s first real hit ‘Latch’was an instant hit created by Disclosure that catapulted him onto the main stage. This is our first encounter with Sam’s upper range and it works seamlessly with the electronic beat, giving us a fist-pumping song to move to. His famous high pitch tone and emotion-packed lyrics have shot him to fame.

Too Good At Goodbyes

Melancholy is Sam’s strong point. He has an innate ability to capture our emotions in his soulful tracks. In the lyrics, we can hear the frustrations of loves lost but also a sense of overcoming hard times and moving on from heartbreak.

Stay With Me

Once again Sam isn’t afraid of using his personal life for inspiration in his music. The honesty portrayed in the lyrics and the video for this song gives us a glimpse into Sam’s personal life. Loneliness, desperation and yearning for love can be deeply felt in Stay With Me. The writer of these beautiful lyrics, James Napier, was nominated for an Ivor Novello award, the premier honour for songwriters around the world.

I’m Not The Only One

Cheating and lies tell the story behind this beautiful pop ballad. It is hard not to be moved by the tragic lyrics in this song.

“You say I’m crazy / ‘Cause you don’t think I know what you’ve done / But when you call me baby / I know I’m not the only one.”

Anyone with experience of unrequited love or love affairs will easily relate to this one. In the video, featuring Glee’s Dianna Argon, we see the heartbreak of an affair play out. We are not surprised that it picked up Song of the Year at the Grammys.

Lay Me Down

This is a true power ballad, bursting with emotion. From the verse, we are led towards a dramatic chorus. The even tempo of this song really allows Sam to show off his flawless vocals. The pain that he can project through his voice has never been so palpable than in this song and you may need a box of tissues by your side for your first listen.

He is one of the most celebrated male vocalists today. A voice full of soul paired with empowering lyrics, what more could you want? His songs pull on our heartstrings and leave us pining for more. We hope you enjoyed reminiscing on some of Sams greatest hits while we wait impatiently for the release of his new album.
