Ariana Grande – Thank U, Next

Thank U, Next is a self-empowerment pop and R&B track in which Ariana reflects on past relationships and confidently declares how she has moved forward. “Got so much patience, I’ve learned from the pain, I turned out amazing, I’ve loved and I’ve lost, But that’s not what I see, ‘Cause look what I’ve found, Ain’t no need for searching”

Justin Bieber – Love Yourself

Justin Bieber provides an anti-Valentine’s playlist selection with Love Yourself. A jazzy guitar arrangement and a sweet trumpet section provide the backbone to this diss track in which Bieber reminisces about an ex lover. “Cause if you like the way you look so much, Oh baby you should go and love yourself”. You tell ‘em Bieber!

La Roux – Bulletproof

La Roux’s 80’s inspired electro pop anthem Bulletproof has been a source of inspiration since its release in 2009. “Been there, done that messed around, I’m having fun, don’t put me down, I’ll never let you sweep me off my feet”. Bulletproof keeps us dancing while helping us keep our heads held high.

Diana Ross – I’m Coming Out

This joyous disco classic might just be the ultimate feel good anthem. Written by Chic members Niall Rodgers and Bernard Edwards and sung by Miss Ross, I’m Coming Out is a bold soulful statement of a track and has been filling dancefloors since its release back in 1980.

Bugzy Malone featuring Dermot Kennedy – Don’t Cry

Manchester’s Bugzy Malone teamed up with Dermot Kennedy for the powerful Don’t Cry. Kennedy’s sincere and passionate vocals mixed with a hard hitting grime beat and bassline makes for a reflective and uplifting track which focuses on the subject of feeling love during hard times.

Katy Perry – Roar

Katy Perry’s Roar is another perfect self-empowering anthem for the anti-Valentine’s playlist. “You held me down, but I got up, Get ready ‘cause I’ve had enough, I see it all, I see it now.”

Lady Gaga – Bad Romance

Lady Gaga’s euro trance, synth heavy hitter Bad Romance can help provide the perfect soundtrack for an anti-Valentine’s weekend.

Amy Winehouse – Back To Black

Back To Black is cemented as one of WInehouse’s most passionately honest breakup songs. The track is greatly inspired by old soul greats and today it stands strongly as a classic in its own right.

The Weeknd – Call Out My Name

The Weeknd’s Call Out My Name rebels against the buzz of Valentine’s day with its cutting lyrics and crisp soulful hip hop production.

Rihanna – Take A Bow

Take A Bow is a scathing response to somebody getting caught by their partner and Rihanna shows no remorse. “You look so dumb right now, Standin’ outside my house, Tryin’ to apologize, You’re so ugly when you cry”. The slow R&B number feels like perhaps one of the ultimate anti-Valentine’s selections

Shawn Mendes – Stitches

Canada’s Shawn Mendes battles a tough breakup in his 2015 hit Stitches. While lyrically Mendes doesn’t shy away from the hurt, there’s an acceptance of needing to move on and the infectious dance track helps to push through the sadness which presents a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ kind of feeling.

Lewis Capaldi – Before You Go

The final track for the anti-Valentine’s Day playlist comes from everyone’s favourite Scotsman, Lewis Capaldi. The acoustic ballad Before You Go pulls on the heartstrings and makes us realise the fragility of relationships and what could have been. Capaldi dwells in the heartbreak, allowing us to know it’s normal to be feeling a little blue!
