Cork-born, London-based Lyra has been electrifying the Irish music scene in the last few years. Her style is a unique blend of traditional Celtic influence, haunting vocals, honesty, and electronic beats. She has been labeled “Beyoncé with a Cork accent”, with influences ranging from Enya to Kate Bush.
We caught up with Lyra ahead of her Cyprus Avenue, and Grand Social gigs to chat about her single ‘Falling’ which was released earlier this year. It was recently followed up with ‘Never Let Go’ so we decided to ask what they mean to her, how she finds inspiration and what drives her.
Following on from tent-jamming sessions at Electric Picnic, and the release of her debut EP W.I.L.D, Lyra has been bubbling away on the Irish music scene before the release of ‘Falling’, culminating in her signing with Polydor records in the UK.
Having made the move from Cork to London and, eventually, Brighton – the influence and dynamism of the music scene fuelled her music and her passion, bringing her to the attention of the likes of; 2FM, Spotify, and the BBC. Last year, she featured in the commemorative U2 Joshua Tree – New Roots anniversary album, helping to raise funds for LauraLynn.
Lyra’s big break came when RTE used her song “Emerald” for the drama ‘Striking Out’. What followed was everything from; Made in Chelsea, to Guinness. Now, Lyra has been firmly placed on the radar with interest from LA and Nashville for some incredible opportunities. 2019 onwards is going to be an exciting time for the Cork woman, we previously listed has as one of the Irish-acts to watch for 2019.
