Madame X is the Madonna’s 14th studio album, and references a nickname that she was given by American dance legend Martha Graham when she was just 19. 41 years later, Madame X takes on a political, fiery tone as it touches on a host of highly-charged issues.
Well accustomed to inventing and reinventing herself, Madonna holds that Madame X as a character is actually the narrator of the album. With each song assuming or revealing a new identity that fights back at a societal ill. In an Instagram teaser, Madonna revealed that:
“Madame X is a secret agent. Traveling around the world. Changing identities. Fighting for freedom. Bringing light to dark places. She is a dancer. A professor. A head of state. A housekeeper. An equestrian. A prisoner. A student. A mother. A child. A teacher. A nun. A singer. A saint. A whore. A spy in the house of love. I am Madame X.”
