Unforgettable Moments From The Weeknd

R&B

Every now and then an artist comes along that revitalises a music genre and this is exactly what happened with the R&B scene when Abel Tesfaye, more commonly known as The Weeknd, appeared centre stage.

Unforgettable Moments From The Weeknd

The loyal Usher fans were just waiting in the wings for a new icon to take centre stage. Merging a mixture of hipster beats and electronic sounds with emotive lyrics provides the perfect blend for contemporary R&B fans.

At 30 years old The Weeknd has carved out a solid reputation among his talented peers, collaborating with some of the biggest names and reaching top of the charts with more than one hit.

Here are a few of The Weeknd’s unforgettable moments during his rise to stardom and musical career.

Earned it from the Fifty Shades of Grey Soundtrack

2015 was a big year for The Weeknd. He managed to get his song, ‘Earned It’, featured as the leading track in one of the biggest movies of the year. His haunting tone fit perfectly with the character of Christian Grey and the overall plot of the movie. Later in 2015 he performed ‘Earned It’ with Alicia Keys at the BET Awards and debuted his song ‘The Hills’ which made it to number 1 in the US and Canada.

Can’t feel my face

A highlight of The Weeknd’s career and one of the most memorable choruses of our time. This song is everything we expect from a fist pumping disco tune. It perfectly showcases his unique style. Big hair with a big attitude is how you could describe it. The electro sound,

smooth tones, high pitched voices and distinctive beats are synonymous with The Weeknd’s music. This toe tapping song led to Rolling Stone naming it as the best song of 2015.

I Feel It Coming ft.Daft Punk

This song slows us down a bit with its edgy R&B vibes. The easy listening and catchy chorus is transferable across generations, making it an instant success in the charts. Here we get to feel The Weeknd’s more chilled out sense of style. The mixture of iconic beats from one of our best loved electro groups and his seductive sound makes this tune addictive. Once you take one listen you won’t want to stop. This was just one song from a massive collaboration with Daft Punk for his Starboy Album, a sure turning point in his career.

Headlining Music Festivals

From releasing songs anonymously on YouTube in 2011 to winning a Grammy in 2017, The Weeknd has certainly made his mark. This was a period of exploration for him where he successfully collaborated with some of the biggest names in the pop industry; Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran to name just two. Now that he had climbed the charts and won the Grammys he was ready to leap into the spotlight, performing at some of the best festivals around the world. In 2018 he made his way to California to perform at Coachella to over 200,000 as the Friday night headline act. This year The Weeknd will perform at the Longitude Festival in Dublin and we can’t wait to see him on the stage.

Heartless 2019

Dramatic base beats, love lyrics and soft tones makes this tune a clubbers dream. Heartless is one of his most recent singles from the new album ‘After Hours’. Rumoured to vaguely make reference to his famous ex-girlfriends, The Weeknd continues to sing his own version of contemporary R&B. This one has a catchy rhythm and it will go down as one of his classic hits.

Blinding Lights

As his second single from the new album, Blinding Lights, stays true to The Weeknd’s funky base and smooth voice. This song was a massive hit, reaching number one in charts across the world. The video for this song takes us on a hallucinatory journey through Las Vegas. It is both intriguing and distributing, which makes it fascinating to watch in full.

To date The Weeknd has won three Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards and has been nominated for an Academy Award. He is a star that has been continually on the rise now for over 8 years.

He has succeeded in bringing the mellow R&B sounds back into the limelight after a period of decline in popularity in the 00’s. Once Usher hung up his boots we were ready for a change in direction. However, it has been making a comeback with artists like The Weeknd, Drake and Frank Ocean flooding the scene. Now he shines bright alongside stars like Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson.

He just recently launched his new album After Hours and it is off to a flying start. We look forward to hearing more about his upcoming tour that is due to kick off on June 11.
